Nicki Minaj has put mental health in the spotlight while taking to the stage at the 2022 MTV Music Awards.
The rapper who wowed the audience with a medley of her biggest hits, received the prestigious Video Vanguard Award which has previously been awarded to some of the world’s most iconic entertainers including Madonna, Jennifer Lopez and Missy Elliot.
During her speech, she thanked the many musicians who’ve influenced her including Rihanna and Beyoncé before giving special mention to artists who are no longer with us:
“I wish Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson were still here. I wish that people understood what they meant and what they were going through. I wish people took mental health seriously, even for the people who we think have perfect lives. I wish Pop Smoke and Juice WRLD and Nipsey Hussle were here.”
Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent and Programming & Events at Paramount shared a statement praising Nicki for breaking barriers for women in hip-hop.
“She has shifted the music industry and cemented her status as a global superstar with her crossover appeal, genre-defying style and continuing to be unapologetically ‘Nicki’”
