Kelsea Ballerini has opened up about the beautiful way Taylor Swift mentored and uplifted her when was just starting out in the industry, giving her a masterclass in “women supporting women.”
Speaking to Podcrushed, hosted by Penn Badgley, Nava Kavelin and Sophie Ansari, the country singer shared how Taylor completely changed her life back in 2015:
“‘Love Me Like You Mean It’ – the first song – it wasn’t even Top 40 on country radio yet and she tweeted about the song,” Kelsea begins, referring to the time Taylor told her millions and millions of followers she’d been listening to Kelsea’s music “on repeat”.
“I’m like a new female artist on an independent label. Like, every odd was just not in my favour, you know?” Kelsea continues.
“And she really put eyeballs on me and ears on the song. And it changed everything! And she kind of took me under her wing for a couple of years, in an off-camera kind of way too. I think there’s a big difference, like people who kind of parade people around and they’re like ‘look at me, I’m doing something good!’ and then the people that are like, ‘come over, I’ll make some dinner, open a bottle of wine and ask me questions.’ And she did it in that kind of way and I’m really grateful for that.”
Kelsea adds that Taylor’s actions were a masterclass in how to support other women:
“It doesn’t mean you have to be best friends with everyone. It means you find people you believe in and build a relationship with and then you can hand it down, continue that. To me, that’s women supporting women.”
During the podcast episode, Kelsea also talks about healing her inner child, her brand new album Subject to Change… and that one time she uhh, stole a mailbox!
