Constance Wu has returned to social media for the first time in three years to share how online pile-ons almost cost her her life – and she hopes to help others who may be experiencing something similar.
The Crazy Rich Asians and Hustlers star has revealed that she survived a suicide attempt after the backlash she received for a series of tweets she posted in 2019 about her show Fresh Off The Boat. (You might remember, she wasn’t very happy about the show being renewed because it meant she wouldn’t be able to take on another project she wanted to do at the time – the Twitterverse then ripped into her for being so ungrateful.)
In a statement on social media, Constance writes that the backlash along with “a few DMs from a fellow Asian actress [who] told me I’d become a blight on the Asian American community” led to her attempting to end her own life.
“Luckily, a friend found me and rushed me to the ER. It was a scary moment that made me reassess a lot in my life.”
Constance shares that she put her career aside to focus on her mental health and has now written a book sharing her story “to reach out and help people talk about the uncomfortable stuff in order to understand it, reckon with it, and open pathways to healing.”
Her memoir, Making a Scene, will be released October 4.
